We would like to thank everyone for their positive feedback on our newsletter changes. We welcome your opinions on our newsletters, as well as our efforts on Facebook, Twitter, our blogsite and our website.

Kitchen Trends

Kitchens are the “heart” of the home so upgrades need to fit the homeowner’s lifestyle as well as increase the home’s value. The desire to make the kitchen a multi-purpose room for entertaining, family dining and “staying connected” has actually brought the office niche back into the kitchen. More counter space is in demand and islands are expanding to become more of a focal point with contrasting colors between perimeter cabinetry and island.

Dark natural finishes are the top choice, followed by medium natural, glazed and white painted.  Traditional kitchens remain the most popular with Shaker kitchens second and contemporary third.  Incandescent lights are now being replaced by energy efficient LED lighting.  Granite/quartz countertops are still the most requested for its durability.  Quartz is non-porous, making it resistant to heat, bacteria and stains.

More color is showing up in the kitchen.  Multiple shades of paint, unique tile patterns, and mixing countertop colors and wood tones.  Gray remains a hot countertop trend, and deep plum and navy are the “new” black.  While wine refrigerators has declined, uncooled wine storage is increasing.  French door refrigerators are the dominant preference.  Drawer microwave ovens and lots of pullout storage including both trash and recycling pullouts are favored.  Pantry space is coveted & trash compactors are gaining in popularity.  Some cabinetry options are on the decline such as the tall pantry and appliance garage.

Stainless steel is still the #1 finish for appliances and faucet fixtures are generally cooler.  There is also an increasing demand for bronze finishes, even with contemporary faucet architecture.  Even brushed nickel is popular for it’s cleaner lines and less ornamentation and detail.

Shonn joins us from our associate business Homework Remodels. He has been a valuable team member working with Steve Shinn, Co-Owner of Tri-Lite Builders, in all aspects of remodeling design and production.

Shonn started his remodeling career in Oregon and soon moved to the Valley for our great weather in March 2000. He has extensive experience in all aspects of construction and remodeling throughout the metro Phoenix area. His creative nature and problem solving skills make him a valuable asset to any remodeling project.

We look forward to his assistance in our development and production of our remodeling projects.

Newsletter Changes

While Wayne is enjoying his retirement, Steve Shinn and I are having fun creating a new look to our newsletter.

We have decided to merge newsletters with Steve’s other company Homework Remodels. New content is also being added to our website, as well as creating an additional new blog site.

Our goal is to increase the amount of helpful information about all aspect of remodeling on our Tri-Lite Builders websites and newsletters.

Todd O’Connor and Aaron Thomas, both long time project managers for Tri-Lite Builders, have been recognized by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) as Certified Remodelers.

NARI has Certified Remodeleralways been the nation’s leader in setting the standard for professional education and performance in the remodeling industry.

The Certified Remodeler designation is one of the four most challenging NARI professional designations to accomplish. Todd and Aaron worked hard to complete the training and extensive test to qualify for the certification. We are very proud of them for their latest professional accomplishment.

Both Tri-Lite Builders and Homework Remodels were approached by the Wellborn Cabinet company to become Premier Authorized Contractors in the valley area.  As a part of the educational process both Steve Shinn and our Production Director Shonn Bell received a full tour of the facilities from John Wellborn. John is one of the third generation of Wellborns working to produce quality cabinets.

It was worth our time to see the quality and attention to detail that they put into every phase of the cabinet making process. We took photos and put together an interesting slide show.

Our 70′s Home Remodel Is Now Complete

Steve and I are working together to put together more photos and details to post on our website to illustrate the improvements that we made to this south Scottsdale home.

Modern Kitchen Remodel

The project included numerous updated features including a new home entry, a  modern style fireplace, installation of a glass wall to open the home to the pool area, and a beautiful new kitchen.

Willo Home Tour Project

Steve Shinn got a chance to preview one of his remodels on the Willo Home Tour a couple weeks ago.

Brooke, the homeowner, was very excited to show off her historic home with all the improvements that were made to make the space more suitable for her lifestyle.

Brooke and a number of her close friends were geared up for the crowds that were on their way starting at 10am and ending at 4pm.

“Before” and “During” photos of various stages of the remodeling project were available to visualize the amazing tansformation.

The kitchen is now the entertaining center of Brooke’s home. What was once a very narrow galley kitchen is now an open and inviting area adjoining the den and laundry room.

Both bathrooms were also remodeled as well as numerous other home improvements.

Harnessing Natural Light

Natural sunlight is hard to come by in certain areas of homes.  Interior hallways, closets and other windowless areas can pose a problem for home owners who like the benefits of sunlight but don’t want to use electricity to achieve it.  Skylights are an option in saving you money and the planet!  Not only do skylights save you money by reducing the need to run lights during the day, but they also visually enhance your home.

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Happy New Year!  From all of us at Tri-Lite we certainly hope that your year is off to great start.  For us, it certainly is.  Tri-Lite Builders has reached a very important milestone this January.  After 27 years of dedicated, hard-work, Wayne Minde is finally ready to retire.   Wayne has not kept his approaching retirement a secret so this announcement may not be a surprise to many of you.   But we have more news to share.

After thoughtful consideration on how to best carry-out the Tri-Lite Builders promise, we are so pleased to announce that we have formed a business partnership and would like to introduce you to our new Business Partner, Steve Shinn.

Steve Shinn, GCP UDCR has been a Phoenix resident since 1959. His background in art, design and service, plus numerous successful years in the remodeling industry, led to forming Homework Remodels, a well regarded remodeling company based in central Phoenix. His focus on client service and respect for the many unique styles of homes has made him stand out amongst professional remodelers in Phoenix and the surrounding communities of Scottsdale, Ahwatukee, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert and Mesa Arizona.

Wayne and I met Steve through the Phoenix National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI)  chapter and, over the years, have developed a friendship with him and his wife Sally.   The more time we spent together, we realized we shared so much more than just working in the same industry.   We share the same values.   For years we have watched and admired Steve’s continued focus on raising the bar in our industry, committing to education and bringingthehighest standards of remodeling quality.     That’s why we are so excited to announce this partnership and are totally confident that partnering with Steve is a great way to move Tri-Lite Builders into the future.

And we are not the only ones to think highly of Steve.  He is endorsed by many of our peers.  In fact, he is currently the only remodeling contractor in the state of Arizona recognized by NARI as a Certified Green Remodeler and Universal Design Certified Remodeler in the state of Arizona.

Steve’s interest in high performance remodeling and building science led him to be one of the few remodeling contractors in the country to be certified by The Building Performance Institute (BPI) as a Building Performance Analyst.

Steve has also been named “2011 Contractor of the Year” for his interior remodeling work in Phoenix. His fellow professional remodelers have elected him to lead the Greater Phoenix NARI Chapter as the president of the association for 2011.

His views on remodeling have been quoted nationally on the NARI GreenRemodeling.org website and Green Builder Magazine and one of his local remodeling projects was recently featured on HGTV’s show BANG FOR YOUR BUCK.

We look forward to introducing you to Steve so that you can meet him person.  We are certainthat as Wayne steps out, we have a strong new Partner to lead the company.

I will remain in my current role at Tri-Lite, continuing to spearhead community outreach, marketing and client relations efforts for the company.

Now that the masonry has been removed from fireplace and framing done, it is time to add wiring for electric fireplace.

Plumbing is being modified in master bath vanity area to accommodate 2 vanity sinks.

Kitchen area is being updated with new ductwork and wiring for recessed can lights.

Great Turn-out at Tri-Lite’s Educational Seminar

We held our free educational seminar on Oct. 19th at Lighting Design in Chandler.   A big thanks to all of our Parnters and vendors and to everyone who came to spend the evening with us!  We had a great session about remodeling and of course, the latest tips in lighting and design!  The LED thin strip lights are the absolute best for undercounter lighting.  No heat, more light, and much more cost effective!  Stay tuned to find out when and where our next seminar will be!

Tri-Lite Project Highlight -  Follow our progress on this 1970s home transformation

Last week, we started work on a complete remodel of a 1970s home.  Our clients purchased this residence for its location and potential.  Tri-Lite was hired to bring the potential to life!  Here are some of the photos we took. Per EPA rules, as an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm we tested for Lead Paint because the home was built prior to 1978.  No lead found, but we did find a lot of work that needs to be done!  Check out these “before” photos.  We can’t wait to show you the “afters”!

Green Tip

It pays to be green! And now your green housing tips could earn you a new kitchen package from Bosch. The Energy Star Partner of the Year for Appliances, Bosch is asking homeowners to submit a 60-second video about how to go green and save energy at home.

Videos should feature tips for going green at home, such as saving water or energy. Homeowners can submit videos for the “Watts Your Green Tip” contest through Nov. 19. Aside from inspiring others to go green and save energy, the winning entry will receive a $6,000 Bosch kitchen suite including an Energy Star-qualified dishwasher and refrigerator, as well as a Bosch freestanding range and over-the-range microwave.

“The “Watts Your Green Tip” video contest drives home the message that even the smallest of changes can have a combined impact on the environment,” John Farley, senior brand and environmental marketing manager for Bosch home appliances, said in a release. “We hope this fun video contest activates Bosch’s fans and encourages green changes in homes across the nation.”

Tri-Lite Builders’ educational seminars are back!  We are happy to annouce that our fall seminar titled “How to Have a Successful Remodel” is scheduled to take place on October 19th in Chandler.

Tri-Lite Project Highlight – Space Update in Tempe

Take a look at this recently completed Tempe master bath remodel.  The homeowners wanted to update the bathroom to give it a luxurious, spa-like feel.  They also wanted to incorporate a bench in the shower and eliminate the shower curb.  Since the view from the window was not desirable, they wanted a design that kept the open feel but eliminated the unattractive landscape.  We’ve incorporated beautiful glass tile accents into the design and created built-in niches for shower and bath accessories.   We hope this inspires you to think about updating your bathroom!

Tri-Lite Project Highlight – Finding Space in Ahwatukee~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~This Ahwatukee kitchen suffered from poor design and awkward space planning. The cumbersome positioning of key appliances greatly impacted functionality for this Ahwatukee Family.  After eventually incorporating “anyone in the refrigerator?” as part of a regular welcome phrase used before entering the kitchen from the garage to avoid running into the door of the fridge, this family finally had enough.

After consulting with Tri-Lite to make the kitchen design more functional, the result and the change is amazing.  Changing the layout and reconfiguring the entry created the feeling of a much larger kitchen.   The beautiful tall Maple cabinets and granite countertops as well as improved window sill add elegance and style.  We love creating space!

Tri-Lite Builders’ Linda Minde was honored as the 2010 “Un-Sung Hero” of the Phoenix chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO).  This annual award recognizes one NAWBO member who continues to give and believe in NAWBO’s mission over time.  Linda’s involvement with NAWBO has continued since she joined the organization in 2003.  Since she joined she has served on the Board of Directors, several committees, served with Women’s Enterprise Foundation – NAWBO’s collaborative partner, and has been a mentor for 3 years for NAWBO women while continuing to support all of the organization’s initiatives with the same compassion and enthusiasm over the years.  Congratulations Linda!

Did you know July kicks off Air-Conditioning Appreciation Days?  From July 3rd until August 15th, the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) recognizes Air-Conditioning Appreciation Days to help homeowners realize that “appreciating” and caring for their air conditioners can save them money by conserving energy and ensure its smooth operation during the hottest and most humid summer days. ARI offers a few tips that can help people stay cool at low costs:

·Run fans to keep air moving, so you feel cooler and can cut back air conditioner use.

·Clean and replace the air conditioner’s filter frequently (monthly during heavy use).

·Keep fallen leaves, grass clippings, foliage and other dirt and debris away from your outdoor unit. And keep the air conditioner’s coils clean, following manufacturers instructions.

And if your air conditioner is on the way out, buy an ENERGY STAR® air conditioner, and save up to 10 percent!
